Hiring Manager: Top Three Qualities of a Great Software Tester
What makes a great software tester? I have hired testers for twenty years, and these are the three qualities I look for in every candidate, ranked from important to most important. The last one is the one that separates good testers from great ones, so stick around for it. There are more than three qualities that matter, but these are the ones I weigh most when I am sitting across from a candidate or deciding who gets the next promotion. I have watched technically strong testers stall because they were missing one of these, and I have watched testers with less experience move ahead because they had all three. I was black and white myself when I started in this field, and learning to be a little gray was one of the best things that happened to my career. The three qualities we cover: Flexibility, because plans change and plan B, C and D are the normal state of a testing project Ability to learn, whether that is a new testing tool, automation, a new product, domain knowledge, or AI Persistence, the tester who does not take no for an answer, keeps asking questions, and pushes development to make the product better If you are early in your testing career, use this as a self-check. Are you flexible when the plan falls apart? Are you willing to pick up a certification, a tool, a domain, or AI skills? Do you stick with a problem until it is fixed? I would like to hear from you: which of the three do you think is the hardest to develop, and why? Drop it in the comments, because I read every one and they shape the next video.
