Modern browsers can now render incredibly rich, immersive geographical visualizations that make users feel like they're flying through real world. Whether it is your morning bike ride, a historical journey record or a log of pizza deliveries, you can put all such data on a web page and animate it smoothly. Join me on the journey into modern mapping technologies to find the best approach for your use case! We'll explore the full spectrum of possibilities - from traditional 2D maps to photorealistic 3D city skylines. We'll start with the fundamentals of efficient tile-based mapping systems and satellite imagery integration, then progressively add complexity, depth and... fun(!) to our visualizations. On the way, we will check what is this 2.5D all about and how it uses file formats dating back to... fax machines! We will also combine the experience from gaming to add a thrill to the camera movement. Through live examples and code snippets, you'll learn how to implement these techniques using popular front-end frameworks and mapping libraries. By the end of the session, you'll have practical knowledge of both the implementation details and UX considerations that make these visualizations truly immersive.
