Test Environment

A test environment is the infrastructure a test runs against — servers, databases, third-party service configurations, and deployed application code — kept separate from production so testing doesn't affect real users or real data. Most teams run several: development, QA/staging, and sometimes a dedicated performance or UAT environment, each serving a different stage of the release process.

The core purpose of a dedicated test environment is isolation: testers need to be able to break things, load unusual data, and run destructive tests without any risk to production. A staging environment that's meant to mirror production as closely as possible — same infrastructure shape, similar data volume — is specifically valuable for catching environment-specific bugs a stripped-down dev environment would miss.

Environment drift, where the test environment quietly diverges from production over time (different config, different dependency versions, different data), is one of the most common reasons a build passes every test in staging and still breaks in production. Infrastructure-as-code practices exist largely to keep environments consistent and reproducible instead of hand-configured and drifting.
