What is the difference between smoke and sanity testing?

Smoke testing is broad and shallow — it checks the main functions of a whole new build for stability. Sanity testing is narrow and deep — it checks one changed area after a fix or small change. Smoke usually comes first on a fresh build; sanity is used on a relatively stable build after changes.
