Is AI making kids better at homework—but worse at actually learning? A new study tracking nearly 27,000 students over 30 months found a surprising relationship between generative AI, homework and exam performance. Students using AI saw their homework scores increase by 18% and spent around 30% less time on assignments. But when they had to take closed-book exams without AI, their scores fell significantly. So, is AI actually helping students learn—or simply helping them finish their homework? This video explores the AI learning penalty, AI homework, student dependence on ChatGPT and other AI tools, and what parents should know about AI in education. More importantly, there are two very different ways students can use AI: 🔹 AI as an answer machine — outsourcing the thinking and getting the homework done. 🔹 AI as a tutor — using it for explanations, hints, feedback and learning while still doing the work themselves. The goal isn't necessarily to keep kids away from AI. It's to teach them how to use AI without outsourcing their thinking. Brain First. AI Second. 🎙️ From the AI Basics Podcast — making AI simple, useful, and human.
