Ramp-Up Period

The ramp-up period is the time a load test takes to gradually increase simulated traffic from zero to its target level, rather than launching all virtual users simultaneously. It exists because real traffic growth is rarely instantaneous, and testing an instant, unrealistic spike measures a different (and less common) failure mode.

A well-configured load test might ramp from 0 to 1,000 concurrent users over 10 minutes, giving the system's auto-scaling, connection pools, and caches time to respond the way they would to genuine organic growth — closer to how real-world traffic actually builds during, say, a marketing campaign or a viral moment.

Skipping the ramp-up and hitting a system with full load instantly is a legitimate test too — it's just testing a different scenario (a sudden spike, closer to spike testing) rather than sustained realistic load, and the two shouldn't be confused when interpreting results.
