Manual Tester
A manual tester executes test cases and explores an application by hand, without writing automation code — relying on judgment, attention to detail, and exploratory technique to find bugs. The role remains essential for usability, exploratory, and ad hoc testing that automation structurally can't replicate.
Despite automation's growth, manual testing hasn't disappeared — it's shifted toward the work automation is genuinely bad at: usability testing, exploratory sessions, and validating subjective, human-judgment-dependent qualities like whether an interface actually feels intuitive, not just whether it technically functions.
Career paths for manual testers increasingly branch toward either deepening exploratory and domain expertise (becoming a specialist in a complex business domain) or picking up automation skills to transition toward an SDET or automation engineer role — pure manual-only testing roles have become less common as automation has matured, though the skill itself remains valuable.
