Performance Test Engineer
A Performance Test Engineer specializes in evaluating how systems behave under load — designing and running load, stress, and soak tests, analyzing bottlenecks, and working with engineering teams to improve response time, throughput, and scalability. It's a deep, tool-heavy specialization within the broader testing discipline.
The role requires a distinct skill set from general functional testing — deep familiarity with load-testing tools (JMeter, Gatling, k6), an understanding of system architecture well enough to reason about where bottlenecks are likely to live, and the analytical ability to interpret dense performance metrics like percentile latency and throughput under varying load conditions.
Performance test engineers often work closely with infrastructure and platform teams, since fixing a discovered bottleneck frequently requires architectural or infrastructure changes outside the testing team's own direct control — the role is as much about diagnosis and clear communication of findings as it is about running the tests themselves.
