Test Architect
A Test Architect designs the overall technical strategy and structure for testing across a large product or organization — choosing frameworks, defining automation architecture, and setting standards other engineers build test automation on top of. It's a senior, highly technical role focused on systemic design over individual test execution.
Where a QA Manager leads people and process, a Test Architect leads technical direction — deciding what the test automation pyramid should look like for a specific organization, which frameworks and tools to standardize on, and how test infrastructure should scale as a product and engineering team both grow substantially larger.
The role typically requires deep hands-on experience across multiple testing disciplines (automation, performance, security) combined with strong system-design judgment, since decisions made at this level — a chosen framework, an architectural pattern — tend to be expensive and disruptive to change later once dozens of engineers have already built on top of them.
